Professor Murray's career started at Iscor Vanderbylpark Steel Works, Newcastle as an Industrial Engineer then he became the Production Manager and his work included Technical Engineering Studies and Problem Solving, Layout Planning, Materials Handling, Stock Control, Marketing, Businesses Simulation, Industrial Economic Studies, Tender Inquiries, Project Management .

After some years, Professor Murray became the Division Manager of the Industrial Engineering Department of the Iscor Vanderbylpark Steel Works wherein he handled Technical Studies, Facilities Planning, Work Study, Organisation and Methods Studies, Job evaluation and Manpower Planning, Operations Research, Project Management, Management Information Systems and Office Automation, Value Management, Statistical Process Control, Productivity-Improvement and Performance Improvement programs and Quality Circles . The department consulted in Business Process Optimisation and Re-engineering, Core Business Process Redesign, Performance Management, Financial Modeling and Industrial Economic & Viability Studies, Business Plans, Justification Audits and Rationalisation Studies, Benchmarking & Best Demonstrated Practice, Business Strategy and Policies, Management Information Systems, IT Systems, Organisational Structural Design, Job Descriptions, Skills Transfer Processes, Training Workshop Design and Presentation, Team Building, Leadership Development, Administrative Systems Development, Process Quality Control, Breakthrough Improvement Team Development, Change Management, Local Economic Development and Base Line Data Collection and Statistical Sampling, Productivity Improvement & Quality Circles .

As a registered competent assessor and assessment designer, Professor Murray was also able to contribute his skills to the academe specifically in the University of Stellenbosch as a Professor/Lecturer wherein he handled classes on Business Management and Administration .

Professor Murray is a Professional Engineer who has a Masters degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering .
